*New song played especially for this show.

This show is particularly meaningful as the performance was only 4 days after Mike’s wife Lajuan passed away after a very short, and a very brave, battle with cancer.  As you’ll hear, Alejandro dedicates “Sister Lost Soul” and “Sensitive Boys” to Mike and his daughter, Jenny.  Both Mike and Jenny were at the show, surrounded by the love of friends and their “Austin family”.

At the beginning of “Sister Lost Soul”, Alejandro starts the song and then has to stop briefly to compose himself before starting the song again.  Alejandro was best man when Mike and Lajuan were married on the banks of the Blanco River in Wimberley TX.

As with nearly every performance, Alejandro and Boys play with a tremendous amount of energy and emotion.  This night, however, must have been a difficult night for everyone involved.  The intensity of the performance is quite evident from the very moment the band hits the stage.

It was recorded by Big Ben Richardson.  Big Ben works sound at The Continental Club in addition to being Alejandro’s tour manager.  He also does FOH sound for all of their road shows when not touring with his own band “Grady.”

The linage would therefore be something like soundboard>unknown>cdr>foobar>flac (level 5).  I used Trader’s Little Helper to create the checksums and torrent.

Thanks as always to Mike for the recordings and for all he does for us!

Another Great Rasjohnmon Mix

Cool Runnin's Mon!  Have Some Mercy

Grateful Dead at Miami Pop Festival Dec. 29, 1968

This really is a classic set from The Grateful Dead.  Part of the New Year's Run of shows. Before the band headed back to California for the New Year's Eve show at the Fillmore, they played an outdoor show at Gulfstream Park (horse racing track) in Hallandale Beach, Florida on December 29, 1968.

The Miami Pop Festival was the name of two different music festivals that took place in 1968 at Gulfstream Park, a horse racing track in HallandaleFlorida (now called Hallandale Beach), just north of Miami.
The first Miami Pop event took place May 18–19, 1968. An estimated 100,000 people attended this concert, which was promoted by Richard O'Barry & Michael Lang, later famous as promoter ofWoodstock. Bands featured at the festival included SteppenwolfThe Jimi Hendrix ExperienceThe Mothers of InventionBlue Cheer and the Crazy World of Arthur Brown. Jimi Hendrix performed "Fire", "Foxy Lady", "Getting my heart back together" and "Purple Haze". Sunday's concert was rained out and because of this, Hendrix wrote "Rainy Day, Dream Away." Chuck BerryThe Blues ImagePacific Gas and Electric and Three Dog Night also performed. The opening act on the main stage on Saturday was a little-known group called The Package and the closing act on that same stage was Jimi Hendrix.
The second Miami Pop Festival was held December 28–30, 1968 at Gulfstream. It was promoted by Tom Rounds, who had previously promoted the seminal Fantasy Fair and Magic Mountain Music Festival on Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, California. True to its name, Miami Pop II emphasized a lighter, "Top 40" style of music including Procol HarumThe TurtlesThe Grass RootsThree Dog NightJose FelicianoThe Blues Image and The Box Tops. More "serious" veins of music were represented by the Paul Butterfield Blues BandHugh MasekelaPacific Gas and ElectricFleetwood MacRichie HavensThe Sweet InspirationsJoni MitchellJr. Walker & The AllstarsThe McCoysSweetwaterThe James Cotton Blues BandCanned HeatThe Charles Lloyd QuartetBooker T. & the M.G.'sIan & SylviaCountry Joe and The FishBuffy St. MarieSteppenwolfThe Amboy Dukes and Iron Butterfly; rounding things out were Chuck Berry's roots rock, the picking of Flatt and Scruggs, jamming from the Grateful Dead, smooth nightclub stylings by Marvin Gaye, raucous soul from Joe Tex, and covering a range from hard rock to folk.[1] Many of these musicians were cast as superheroes in a commemorative comic book distributed at the festival.

21. You and the Night and the Music (test + alternate take) [December 21]
22. When I Take My Sugar to Tea (studio chatter + alternate take) [December 21]

Excerpts of sessions for the album RING-A-DING-DING, with the usual assortment of alternate takes, incomplete takes, false starts, session chatter, etc. One notable inclusion is the brief attempt at "Have You Met Miss Jones?" Sinatra can be heard expressing the opinion that the arrangement doesn't fit the mood of the album, and the track was soon abandoned. (A completely different Billy May arrangement of the song, lacking the opening verse, was subsequently issued on the Reprise album SINATRA SWINGS a.k.a. SWING ALONG WITH ME.)

Jimmy Cliff - Hall of Fame Mon!

Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame Inductee JIMMY CLIFF, according to a recent Rolling Stone article, was key in getting Bob Marley his start - they were friends from the teenage years and Jimmy helped him get his first two songs recorded.  Sadly, Bob is no longer around to make great new music but Jimmy keeps pushing on.  Here is a recent concert that demonstrated he is still in great form (part two can found at www.VitalVibes.com)    Here's a link to the first part of the show - Jimmy Cliff in Concert - June 2012

A Rasjohnmon Reggae Mix

Today I have been listening to a nice mix of Reggae by artists not normally know as Reggae musicians. The opening track was actually the first Reggae pop chart hit by Millie Small, a British artist. This is from a cassette tape in my mix collection and over the two sides you will recognize several big time artists who are clearly Reggae Music fans themselves and wanted to take a shot at a Reggae tune. Some of the tracks were pretty big hits as well. Eric Clapton's version of "I Shot The Sheriff" (a song written by Bob Marley) actually was important in taking Bob Marley's career to a global level. You'll find this mix at VitalVibes.com - here are the title listing to look for: RasJohnMon's PositiVibes Mix #12 - Part 1 RasJohnMon's PositiVibes Mix #12 - Part 2

Dave Matthews - Spirit - Sinead O'Connor

Some nice new additions to the www.VitalVibes.com archives of great non-commercially released recordings - The Dave Matthews Band is on their Summer Tour 2012 now - here's a show from last summer:
Dave Matthews Band - Lakeside - Chicago, IL - July 10, 2011 - Part One  Here's a link to a DVD of an official release - awesome show for any DMB fans out there!
Dave Matthews Band - The Central Park Concert
Next, one of my long time favorite bands - SPIRIT - featuring Randy California - not many live recordings of them floating around but here's one you should enjoy -
Spirit - the link to the show is below but this link will take you to Amazon and Spirit's first album - check it out! There were many classic albums that came out of L.A. in the 60's and this is certainly one of them. One of the greatest opening songs for a band's career has to be "Fresh Garbage". A "green" song that was about 35 years ahead of its time, no less. "Uncle Jack" has a vocal that really sticks with you for awhile. Then the "Mechanical World". Great vocals, great guitar from Randy California, moody and strange song. Typical Spirit. This song leads directly into a beautiful Randy piece entitled "Taurus". If it sounds vaguely like "Stairway to Heaven" it should considering that Led Zep toured with Spirit in 1968 (as the opening act!) and Page essentially ripped off the main chords. I prefer "Taurus" to "Stairway". The opening string section with the cello and flute is beautiful. The variety on the entire album is awesome.
Spirit - My Father's Place - Roslyn, NY - October 31, 1975 - there is also a show from 1987 at www.VitalVibes.com

Finally, a show from another talented artist Sinéad O'Connor - Paradise Theater - Boston, MA. - March 31, 1988
Here's a good sampler of Ms. O'Connor So Far: Best of Sinead O'Connor

Some Vital BEATLES Vibes

Added a bunch of Beatles stuff up at www.VitalVibes.com - the Let It Be sessions are audio tracks from cameras that were apparently running continuously in the studio - money was obviously no object since these were still the days of film.  As far as what is captured on the tapes, it's a reality show in the studio with the Beatles providing some interesting segments with a lot of chit-chat and repetition.  I doubt anyone is going to want to listen to all eight hours but see what you think and let us know if you find any particular highlights you think we should direct people to.

The other new Beatle vibes are ALL good.  The Whitology segments were probably a radio program like the stuff Westwood One did with interview snippets and alternate version and studio outtakes.  Quality is great.  Same goes for the "Alternate Versions" - somebody took a lot of time to compile this two part collection that covers a good stretch of the Beatles recording career.  Finally, the Acoustic Demos are very nice - recorded a George's house in Esher, England, this was obviously a time when the boys were all getting along well and having a nice time hanging out together working on some tunes.

I have the rooftop concert that was the last live performance and some of the early live performance which I will probably put up at some point but what we have up is some good listening!

Israel Vibration at SOB's in NYC

This is a Rasjohnmon recording from 1991. SOB's is a great little club restaurant in lower Manhattan not far from the Village and Soho. I was there with good friend Ras Hank sitting at a table right in front of the stage. We got there early to grab the good table and have something to eat before the show. The food there is good and the Red Stripes cold.

Our good buddy, Roger RoJah Steffens was in the house to open the show with his Bob Marley Tribute Show of gems pulled from his extensive archive treasure trove of Bob Marley material.  Rojah has been a good friend for years since I met him with Timothy White at Westwood One.  We have shared a lot of good times and a few of the shows at the VitalVibes.com archive originally were sent to me from him.  He is the ultimate authority on Bob Marley as far as I am concerned - he is a truly upful and bright Spirit - blessings to you always Rojah!

By the time the show started the place had filled up with a couple of hundred people.  I sat there with my wife Maureen, Hank and his wife hiding the stereo microphone going to my Sony D5 hidden in my briefcase.  Rojah and Israel Vibration gave us all a most enjoyable night. To tune-in to the show, look for Israel Vibration in the Reggae Music section at the beginning of the listing at www.vitalvibes.com - enjoy!

The Spirit of Cultural Fusion

You can come up with lots of definitions for cultural fusion. The coming together of cultures. The blending. You can be opposed to it thinking the distinct qualities of various cultures are being lost to a homogenized less than the parts whole. Or, you can see those same distinct qualities being mixed in a gumbo to create something wonderful.

Cultural Fusion dot org is not about either of these although it can't help but be to some extent. It's about one world family of billions of distinct individuals and other living creatures being on the cutting edge of creation. Each life force participating in inventing the future. A Cultural Fusion that is not about the loss of distinctness - a Cultural Fusion that is the result of goals, aspirations and beliefs of each of those billions having a tangible effect on the reality of the whole.

Shakespeare said "All the world is a stage and all the men and women merely players" - that is a profound concept. It is also only part of the equation. We are not just players subject to unknown upcoming scenes that we have to play like some grand improv "reacting" to what we discover in the script as we go along. NO. We are also the "writers" of our own parts and the "directors" of how each scene plays out. We draw other players developing similar plot lines into our scene so we can be the needed supporting players for each of our scripts.

Here's the rub. Everything that happens in your own personal adventure at the cutting edge of creation is something you created. You wrote the script before it happened. If everything is going great, it is easier to accept that concept. But since the road to "success" is not one with a destination - it is an evolution - you may find yourself playing scenes you are sure you never would have written for yourself. You did. You are.

Our "Cultural Fusion" is about how all the diversity and contrast within humanity is all about a grand and never ending evolution of manifestation. What is the purpose of your life? To become a skilled creator and use your innate power as the writer and director of your part in the play to move creation to a more joyful place.

CulturalFusion.org points to Reggae12.com right now but it may well evolve beyond that because it is more than Music or Reggae.

Marley and More

If you have not seen the new Bob Marley documentary film playing in a limited theater run and all over paid cable, SEE IT!  It is a wonderful film full of insight, wisdom and great music.  There have been very few people who have had as huge an impact on the world (with only 36 years to get it all done) as Bob did.  The world gives thanks for what he gave us all.

That said, we would suggest a trip over to Reggae12.com, RadioReggae.com, or CulturalFusion.org to tune-in to the sounds of a beach somewhere in Jamaica (put the headphones on, sit back and chill) then add some music to your beach visit with one of the players on the page - there's a nice all Marley mix you will enjoy.  You can adjust the volume levels to get the right balance of surf to music... Irie Mon!  Enjoy.

Phil Keeps Rockin' Out Great Shows

Phil Lesh is amazing!  He clearly proves that you never have to be too old to ROCK n' Roll.  He's been kickin around the planet for over 70 years and does not seem to have any interest in stopping.  Furthur, the most recent incarnation of the Grateful Dead, with buddy Bob Weir is playing at a level sure to have Jerry Garcia up in heaven smiling broadly.  This show with some of Phil's other buddies is going to put a big smile on your face if you are at all a fan.  Enjoy this one - another gift from Phil to all of us.

You'll find it in the directory at www.VitalVibes.com

Bob Marley at Tower Theatre - Apr. 23, 1976

We have a new favorite unreleased Bob Marley and The Wailers show. This show took place the week before the Beacon Theater show in NYC that I was lucky enough to be in the audience for. First, it includes the I-Three's set that opened the show which helps set the mood for the performance. Besides being great audio quality, Bob adds some nice verbal flourishes to the songs which I think you will enjoy. Nice One! Jah Rastafari!! A month later, one of Bob's most acclaimed shows would take place at the Roxy in L.A. - attended by people like Bob Dylan and George Harrison... PRLog (Press Release) - Jan 17, 2012 -
Johnny's Hitviews first stealth  recordings took  place at the famed Fillmore East in Greenwich Village, NYC back in the 70's.  The list of shows included the Allman Brothers, Mountain, The Who, The Doors, Poco and lots more.  Johnny didn't get recordings of all of them sadly but he became a major fan of LIVE music.

Over the years since, Johnny Hitviews has dedicated his life to music and in particular, archiving every great concert recording he could find.  His interest in being able to share all this wonderful music led to the creation of www.VitalVibes.com.

"I know there are a lot of people like me out there who love hearing a band live.  You can't buy any of these recordings but they are too good not give fans a chance to hear.  My hope is that listening to these concerts will acquaint people with artists they have not heard and be a reminder of how great these artists are for past or current fans.  Then, hopefully, they will use one of the links on the site for emusic, or itunes or amazon to buy some music." said Johnny.

The list of shows includes major stars like Bob Dylan, Elton John, Frank Zappa, Ryan Adams, The Grateful Dead, Johnny Cash, AC/DC and John Lennon to name a few plus many more both mainstream and more obscure.  Genres go from Classical to an extensive Reggae collection from partner sites www.RadioReggae.com and www.Reggae12.com.

"We have one of Led Zeppelin's first shows in the U.S. just a few weeks after Woodstock.  We have my favorite Bob Dylan show in peak form at the Roseland Ballroom in NYC.  Then there is the recent performance by U2 at Glastonbury.  They are all great to hear and we will keep adding more shows." stated Johnny Hitviews.

Visit www.VitalVibes.com a trip through time and music genres through Johnny Hitviews concert archives.  The site is free to use.  You are encouraged to use links on the site to purchase music and other items.

"Enjoy the Vital Vibes at the site and support the artists by buying their commercial releases - they deserve it, they have brought and continue to bring us so many good times!" concludes Hitviews.

RasJohnMon Calling ALL Reggae Music Fans in South Florida

Looks like South Florida is going to be the place for LIVE Reggae Music for a few weeks in early 2012.  The annual Marley Family Bash is taking place on Key Biscayne on March 3.  The weekend before you can catch Third World and Inner Circle at Knight Concert Hall in Miami.  BUT they saved the BIG Show for Last.  The finale of this trio of great Reggae Music shows will be on March 11 just west of Fort Lauderdale at the Central Broward Regional Park:  Ali Campbell's UB40 and Toots and The Maytals will headline a full day of music and food and fun in the sun.

UB40 must have hit South Florida sometime in the past because they have been everywhere over a career that has sold over 70 million records.  Ali Campbell is a founding member and lead singer on most of the band's many big hits.  Their version of "Red Red Wine" is probably the best known but they have a deep catalog of well established material with many of the hits remakes of classic Reggae tracks.  Great music and high energy performances have put them on the biggest stages in the world including their classic performance at LIVE 8.  Ali Campbell recently split off on his own seeking to freshen things up.  His new incarnation of UB40 brings renewed energy to the band's music and some choice new material.  Ali is one of the top champions of Reggae Music and it is going to be very exciting to see him here in a beautiful outdoor venue at Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill.

If it was only Ali Campbell's UB40 it would be a great show but you also have one of the true icons of Reggae Music, Toots Hibbert (Toots and The Maytals) also performing.  Toots is a contemporary of Bob Marley and he is generally credited with naming the Reggae Music genre with his 1968 song "Do the Reggay".  His band's performance in the Jimmy Cliff movie, The Harder They Come, elevated him to International stardom and he has never stopped.  Recent years have seen the release of several big selling albums and his 2005 "True Love" won the Grammy for Best Reggae Album of the Year.  I have seen him at Reggae SumFest in Jamaica and a few years back at the Lagerado Music Festival just a few miles from where he will be playing on March 11.

Add to that massive invasion of talent all kinds of great food and craft vendors plus more BIG names in Reggae Music - you're going to be sorry if you miss this show.  Gates open at 12 noon on Sunday, March 11 and the music will start at 2pm.  If you are a fairly big Reggae Music fan you will know most of the other performers:  U-Roy, John Holt, Wailing Souls, Ambelique, Mical Rustle (the Ali Campbell of Grammy winner Black Uhuru), Dancehall Diva Lady Saw, Etana and The Code Red Band. Google any of these artists and you'll see, if you don't already know - this is BIG time.  IRIE Mon is all I can say!  It's happening and it's going to be right here, just a short drive from anywhere in South Florida - a whole day of body moving, uplifting, soulful, rockin' Roots Reggae!

Advance tickets are only $30 for the next couple of weeks - Ticketmaster.com has them.  Don't miss this show - it's going to be an awesome Sunday in the park.  Bring the whole family!  Kids under 12 are FREE - you probably won't be able to find a more enjoyable day in the park the rest of the year!  See you there.
